When it is hot outside, the last thing you expect to see is ice on your air conditioner. But it happens more often than many homeowners realize. If your AC is freezing up, your system may still be running, but it probably is not cooling your home the way it should.
A frozen air conditioner can be confusing. After all, your AC is supposed to make cold air. So why would ice be a problem? The truth is that ice on your AC unit is usually a warning sign that something is wrong with airflow, refrigerant, or another part of the system. If you notice ice on your AC unit, weak airflow, warm air from the vents, or your home is not cooling properly, it is important to act quickly. Running the system while it is frozen can lead to bigger problems and more expensive repairs. Here is what causes an AC to freeze, what you should do right away, and when it is time to call a professional. What Does It Mean When Your AC Freezes Up? Your air conditioner cools your home by moving warm indoor air across the evaporator coil. Refrigerant inside the coil absorbs heat from the air, and the cooled air is then pushed back through your home. For this process to work correctly, your system needs proper airflow and the right refrigerant pressure. If something disrupts that balance, the evaporator coil can get too cold. Moisture from the air can then freeze on the coil, refrigerant lines, or other parts of the system. Once ice starts forming, airflow becomes even more restricted. Dirty Air Filters Can Cause AC Freezing One of the most common reasons for AC freezing up is a dirty air filter. Clogged Drain Line or Moisture Issues Your air conditioner removes moisture from the air as it cools. That moisture normally drains away through the condensate drain line. If the drain line becomes clogged, moisture can back up and create problems around the indoor unit.
